    Cyrillic characters on the cellphone..?

Can anyone explain to me how do Russian cellphones work, cause I heard the letters on the keys aren't cyrillic, so what's the correspondence between the letters that allows russians to send SMS messages in cyrillic?

I got an SMS from a russian friend the other day and it worked perfectly well in my Nokia 6100 to read the cyrillic characters. Does anyone know if I can actually write with those letters in my cellphone then? Cause, damn, if I can read them, I must be able to write with them too, or so I hope!
It works to copy the message and forward it, but I wonder if there's anything I can do to activate that alphabet in my cellphone...

Are all (or most) cellphones able to display those characters? I wonder if my cellphone would display Hebrew or Arabic characters in it too....

Are they? ALL of them? Cuz I know someone that went to Moscow and saw a girl typing on her cell, that had Latin characters, and the display showed cyrillic, that's why I wonder.

Ok, so what do the cells that don't have cyrillic on the keys have inside them that makes them able to display and write in cyrillic? I want that too! :P

Erika, you can just switch to Russian in your phone's menu and then you can type cyrillic letters, it will take you about 3 days to learn which button corresponds to given cyrillic letters.

The thing is my cellphone's menu doesn't have Russian. Then that means I won't ever be able to type in Russian? Or who knows, there might be a way to add it somehow...?

That depends on the software used in Phone.
Usually manufacturers don't include Russian language support into versions that they ship to countries where russian is not among widely spoken languages.

In order to make your phone to support russian language it needs to be flashed with a new firmware.

Consult any technical service for the firmware you need (if any - some obsolete models lack that ability). They also could help you to download it (for a fee, of course).
Send me a PM if you need me.

Hmm, thanks for the info. I'll try to contact someone... perhaps if I send a mail to Nokia they'll tell me...

You could try, but I doubt that they will answer. Try local mobile phone dealer, you'll get much faster response.
Or, even better, try to ask in some internet forums related to celluar phones.
