Who was "плыли в вышине"? Две звезды or Leschenko and his beloved?
By the way, how can someone sing so cheerfully about "прощание"? I mean, I like Lev Leschenko so much, but isn't one supposed to look sad when saying "Чтоб понять мою печаль, В пустое небо посмотри"?
Any other fans of Lev Leschenko, Alla Pugacheva, and Dmitri Khvorostovsky? I have learned 40% of the Russian I know by listening to their songs...

Metaphorically, the two lovers are the stars.... or whatever you want to read into it... Poetry is great that way

I can't stand Alla Pugacheva. And I'm confused by Pugacheva and Khvorostovsky in the same sentence?

Khvorostovsky is okay but sometimes he sings roles that he just doesn't have the voice for. It's annoying. But I loved him in the Met production of Onegin with Renée Fleming.

I have to agree that it's a rather odd combination! As a matter of fact, I like the late Yuri Gulyaev very much too.
I guess I have an idea why you don't like Alka. It's a bit annoying that she thinks it's funny to act like a 16-year-old girlie. But in her youth she was wonderful! Have you watched "Женщина которая поет"?

Yes the ridiculous behaviour is a huge part of it. I also don't like that kind of sound. I hate "pop"

1. No it's Italian and the sound is unmistakably Verdi. The aria is "Cortigiani, vil razza dannata" from Rigoletto by Verdi. Rigoletto is cursing the courtiers for tormenting him while he's looking for his daughter.

Here's that whole scene with the amazing Tito Gobbi.

This is one of those things I mentioned before. Hvorostovsky doesn't have the voice for Verdi, in my opinion. "Verdi baritone" is its own class. Tito Gobbi is incredible. Of course everyone has their opinion on these things! So feel free to disagree!

2. I checked my copy of that performance released on Decca. There are no Russian subtitles. However, the libretto should be easy to find so you can follow along. I can PM you a link to where you can get the download of the Decca release (the Met performance) if you want.

I'm a rookie at classical music. I like the sound of it so much but I know next to nothing about technical details. Actually I know both Khvorostovsky and Gulyaev for their less classical works. Some opera singers are capable of doing an excellent job in more popular music. The Italian singer Andrea Bocelli is another example, and another favorite of mine. Even Pavarotti tried it too.
For me, Yuri Gulyaev's voice is forever associated with "Твоя нежность", "Желаю вам", "Русское поле", и.т.д.

А ещё у нас тут есть Николай Басков.

Многим нравится.
