Is it because both teams suck hard today?

Wow, we must account for 80% of the worldwide discussion of the Canadian Governor-General on this forum! That's still kind of weird to me that they'd give it to Tretyak. Sure, he was a great hockey player (although I think that most Westerners would remember him as the losing goalie in 1980, if at all) and I don't doubt that he furthered Russian-Canadian cooperation, but he is a foreign citizen -- and a member of a foreign legislature to boot.

I believe they've awarded the decorations to non-Canadians on several occaisions. I can't recall specifics, but I know I've read about it in Social Studies. I'll go look it up again.

Also, Michaelle Jean, while a Canadian citizen now, was born in the Caribbean and held a dual citizenship. (France and Canada) before she became GG. So I don't think it's all that strange.
