Thread: Do you need Russian texts with stress marks?

I was just thinking that it is possible to make the whole books of Russian poetry and other stuff with stress marks above the words. Perhaps having such texts is a good way to improve your pronunciation and reading skills. And you don't have to look into a dictionary every time you don't remember how to pronounce something. But, from the other side, you may become used to such a books and will not be able to read normal texts properly. So, what do you think of it, and do you know whether such texts already exist?

I think it's a really appropiate idea to inidcate the stress because, for such a long while, I've been having problems with them.

Well-rhyming and -scanning poetry doesn't need stress marks. And I do think there are enough 'Easy Reader'-type books with stress marks on the market already. If you want to and can read Tolstoy or Dostoevskij you'll probably know how stress works as well.

I don't mean only poetry, but everything that can be interesting

Anyone who has heard me speak Russian knows that I often misplace stress because I was too lazy to learn stress rules. But as Jas said there are already many reader books with the stress marks.

I think texts with marked stress are very useful, especially for proper nouns! There are some such texts on the market, but more would be welcome since reading good literature with stress markings would kill two birds with one stone--you'd get to read the text and learn stress at the same time. I taught myself to read Russian, and for a while I had no real idea where to stress many of the words I could read.

Stress marks should be as important in the russian language as they are in the German and Spanish languages.

Especially now since there's no more "over head costs" to adding the extra tick or two over different letters.

What do you do if u gotta read a word where you dont know the stress?

There aren't any stress marks in German or Spanish. German has umlauts, which actually change the way vowels sound, and Spanish has superfluous accent marks that aren't there for anything(they don't mark stress). French has accent marks too, which sometimes help in determining the pronunciation of a vowel, but they're mainly there "just to be there."

I think it would be great if Russian had stress marks (as does Greek, for example). Even some native speakers don't know how to pronounce correctly certain words (позвонишь, включишь). Also I want ё to return. But there is hardly anything we can do about these issues.

It doesn't any stress mark in Spanish, French, that is true.I am considering study rules in the future. But, righ now, 90 % of times which I pronounce a new word the first time I did not well. Russian speaker who pronounce spanish words have the same problem as me.
I think text for beginners with stress it will be useful.

Why would we want to have stress marks in Russian? I mean, surely for textbooks they would be great and I'm sure they use them in textbooks, but there's no point in using stress marks in texts written for native speakers. The thing with позвонишь, etc. is all about dialect, level of education, etc. Ё is redundant. I mean, come on guys, yours is a far more irregular system yet only crazy people tok ov chengin yo spelin rulz.

Russian used to have stress marks, but Peter the Great abolished them. So, to all of you struggling with this, you can thank Czar Peter!

Why would he want to do that?? He must have had a very good reason

He loved Holland, could speak Dutch, had been to Zaandam, Amsterdam etc. to come up with ideas for his new city St. Petersburg, the Dutch had a history of working for the Russians (as architects, in the army - one was an admiral, etc.), were the first Western Europeans to trade with them. Etc. etc.
