Thread: Cannot understand/translate some texts in game (Sakura Spirit)

    Cannot understand/translate some texts in game (Sakura Spirit)

    First of all I need to say, I'm not a translator of a game. I play it for myself.
    Be aware of spoilers for Sakura Spirit :)


    I translated almost all via en-ru dictionary, but there were some dialogs which I can't understand even using dict. There is a part of them:

    [If you need more context for text, ask it. I will try to remember (all texts saved as screens, so I can't get more text before or after specified moments]
    Green text color means question was answered!

    1.
    Text: (Thoughts) At the tough against her shoulder, Ariya-senpai reacted. She grabbed hold of my hand, and, with a loud grunt, shifted her weight, curling and tipping me over her shoulder.
    Context: Ariya-senpai - is a judo-club girl member. Protagonist touched her when she was practicing.
    Problems:
    1. Can't imagine sequence of girl motions. Also don't understand meaning of 'shifted her weigh' (how the `weigh` can be `shifted`?).
    2. Am I right `curling and tipping me over`means that girl `grab his collar` then `roll it in hand`, then `throw protagonist over her shoulder/back`? Is it this : http://judo.narod.ru/images/kubinage.jpg ?

    Context: Protagonist talks with girl, who lives with another one. They are close friends.
    Problems:
    1. `be quite a challenge` - what is it?
    2. `-(Protagonist): You're already a handful to deal with when you start teasing...` - can't translate at all

    Text: (Someone) Several shop owners all report seeing the same girl enter their shops, take food and eat it without paying...
    Problem:
    1. `Several shop owners all report` - if I'm right, `several` and `all` used for noun `shop owners`. But `several` specifies 'One of ..' and `all` is 'Everyone of '. I'm tangled with this contradiction.
    2. (if `several` haven't been used or have no meaning in that text) `shop owners all report` - why not it says `shop owners report`? Is there some special meaning of `all`?

    Text: (Protagonist) They are here to help, so use your energy for something usefull: like tearing this damd slime rather than yelling at the top of your longs.
    Context: `Slime` is used like movement trap; The text was said to frightened motionless guard.
    Problems:
    1. What is `damd`? Is it mistake and it's really a `damn`?
    2. `at the top of your longs` - have no idea what is it.

    Text: (Someone. Context lost) Do I need to remind you we can barely stand our ground against them when on their own? Should they collaborate all would be lost
    Context: (Conversation with the same guard but after that fight). Guards defended village from attackers which can use magic. So this Text points, that villagers can do nothing against them.
    Problem:
    1. What does `on their own` mean?


    6.
    Text: (Some girl) Innocent my rear...
    Context: lost. But it certainly has no sexual context. It was used in conversation between >=3 peoples.


    7.
    Text: (Some girl) I don't know exactly what happened, but there was a big fire, and my parents got trapped inside our house. They never made it out. So yeah, don't tell me I am not....
    Context: Girl talks about herself in opposite protagonist, who called her....
    Problems:
    1. Can't understand meaning of `they never made it out`


    8.
    Text: (Some girl) Forgive my time away. I must admit, I was not expecting such revelations.
    Context: lost
    Problems:
    1. How `time` can be `forgive away`? And what is `forgive AWAY`?


    9.
    Text: (Guard) Nature doesn't need all that to stop me, I'm not great. I'm just a girl who's trying to impress someone they never can. All it takes to stop me is some drizzle...
    Prehistory: frightened motionless guard understood her useless
    Context: Protagonist and Guard are contesting about defending of a village. Previous this Guard was frightened by enemy and therefore do nothing to defend people and whole village. While disputing with Protagonist, Guard admit, what she is almost useless.

    Problems:
    1. Does `nature doesn't need all that to stop me` mean `There is a lot of whic can stop me`? Also, what is `all that`? There were nothing in the context related to `all that`.
    2. Is `they never can` equal to `they (will) never be`? Why `can` is used without verb? How is it possible?
    3. Is `drizzle`equal to `light fright`?


    10.
    Text: (Protagonist) If you let one loss break your spirit then you're unsuitable for being a warrior. It's because there are stronger people around that you get the motivation to improve.
    Context: the same speech with guard. Protagonist tries to cheer her up.
    Problems:
    1. The part with `there are stronger people around` is simple, but after it there are no logic for me. Why there is `THAT you get`, and how `you get the motivation to improve` related with `stronger people around`? Can't understand grammar beginning with `that`.


    11.
    Text: (Thoughts) The woman's next attack caught me by surprise. She flung her weapon towards me at full strength, hitting me in the arm which made me flinch, and turned away from me, slipping on the wet grass beneath.
    Context: Protagonist and guard after some time of conversation started fighting.
    Problems:
    1. Can't understand sequence of motions. Girl `turned away` - means literaly `girl turn back so enemy can see her back`? I don't think it can be so, because it's fight and nobody will show his back for enemy. Also it makes no sence what she `turned away` and `slipped` - I can't imagine how you could slip via turning back. Or is `turned away` means `stepped back`?
    2. `Slipping on the wet grass beneath` means `slipped because of wet grass and toppled on it`? Or is it `made slipping motion because of wet grass` (and it is not mentioned, is she toppled or not)?



    12.
    Text: (Thoughts) We walked back to the town exchanging idle chatter. I managed to establish that while the girl was training her body well, she lacked a lot of discipline, and, despite her feelings of inferiority, a fair amount of spirit to her.
    Context: the same situation, but it is afterwards of the fight.
    Problems:
    1. What is `to her`? Also can't understand grammatical bond of `a fair amout of spirit to her` with rest sentence.


    13.
    Text: (Guard) Well, he's not going to find out, is he? It aren't no thing, we need to get going quickly, and we need to get moving. So get your clothes off and change, dang it.
    Context: The same situation. Protagonist and girl are changing their clothes, because while they were fighting it was raining. The protagonist is against the idea to change clothes aside of a girl. `he's not going to find out, is he?` - is about girl's grandfather.
    Problems:
    1. What is the grammar of `It aren't no thing`? It makes my brain to explode.
    2. What is `dang it`?


    14.
    Text: (Thoughts) I quickly turned around, trying my best not to peek while she was changing and declared firmly.
    Context: Protagonist accidentally burst into the girl's room while she were changing.
    Problems:
    1. Does `decalred firmly` mean `expose every part of a body`?



    Well, it took one hour. Really hope, it won't be useless and somebody still helping there (: Can help in response. For example, can check your russian grammar in the post.
    p.s. Also it will be great, if you point any of my mistakes in mine english sentences.
    p.p.s. Is there any tags for SPOILER or CROSS-TEXT? Can't find one.

    Problem:

    Может, ей природа ураган закатила, чтоб её остановить, а девушке и лёгкого дождичка достаточно. (нужно больше контекста).

    Полагаю, можно на русском.
    Не совсем уверен насчет этого. Насколько я себе представляю, "без посторонней помощи", то есть "собственными силами" писалось бы так:
    `Do I need to remind you we can barely stand our ground against them when on ours own?`
    Что переводилось бы как:
    `Стоит ли мне тебе напомнить, что сами мы с трудом может сдерживать их натиск?`
    Я не говорю, что `без посторонней помощи` неправильно. Наоборот, звучит логично, учитывая, что до этого Guards'ам помогли другие люди и, видимо, речь о том, что без их помощи не справиться. Но с точки зрения грамматики - я не понимаю, почему `their`

    Мм, да, полагаю это больше не контекст, а prehistory что ли.
    Контекст на англ. добавил в первый пост.
    На русском, если проще: Text появляется во время спора Guard'а с главным героем. Тема - защита деревни. В предыдущей стычке с врагом, эта Guard так испугалась, что ничего не смогла сделать и просто стояла в стороне в оцепенении. Собственно, об этом и спор. В Text девушка признает, что она слаба и ни на что не способна.

    Prehistory - это и есть широкий контекст. Я же в эту игру не играю, и что у вас на экране мне не видно. Я даже не знала, что Guard у вас женского пола.

    Тут вы правы, я была невнимательна. Но, опять же, контекста надостаточно.
    Тут может быть игра слов. "Hold ground" - стоять на своём, не сдавать позиций, а "ground" - это земля. Возможно, (без контекста трудно разобраться) Когда мы сражаемся на их территории, мы с трудом удерживаем позиции.

    Постараюсь добавить ещё контекста, но не уверен, поможет ли (обновил первый пост): Text появляется после окончания защиты деревни от нападающих, что могут использовать магию. Жители деревни не владеют магией и только Guards могут хоть что-то сделать (у них мечи, копья), но их явно не хватает, так как во время битвы одного "схватили" (обездвиживающая ловушка), а второй (тот самый, который drizzle) стоял как вкопанный из-за страха.
    Сами же Guards или жители деревни никогда не ступали на землю нападавших. Они даже точно не знают, где они живут. Так что "на их территории", к сожалению, не подходит.

    Да, это я понимаю. Мне просто интересно с чисто грамматической точки зрения,
    1. что за Nature (никогда раньше не видел такого. Обычно либо `There is` или `It`, если обезличенно или с точки зрения "всего и вся"),
    2. почему `they never can`, а не `they never (will) be` (например, на русском, второе звучало бы корректнее `и выдавать себя за тех, кем они никогда не были/не станут`. А просто `can` я вижу впервые и не уверен, что я читал о таком грамматическом применении `can`),
    3. и почему используется `drizzle`? Идиома или типа того? В данном случае автор текста хотел показать `самую наименьшую из возможных сил` (как я понимаю). Но почему `drizzle`, который `мелкий дождик`?

А просто `can` я вижу впервые и не уверен, что я читал о таком грамматическом применении `can`), I'm just a girl who's trying to impress someone they never can. - Я просто девушка, старающаяся произвести впечатление (impress) на того, на кого я впечатление произвести никогда не смогу. (Чего-то вообще не очень грамотно написано по-английски.)
    3. и почему используется `drizzle`? Идиома или типа того? В данном случае автор текста хотел показать `самую наименьшую из возможных сил` (как я понимаю). Но почему `drizzle`, который `мелкий дождик`? За этим - к автору. Что хотел показать автор текста, знает только автор текста.

    3. Several splits the shop owners reporting into multiple occasions, it happened once, and again, and again, rather than one conversation with multiple shop owners. "All" is said just as a reiterating emphasizer, and it sort of brings the idea back together, that they ALL said the same thing.

    5. On their own means that, just as things are NOW, they can not win, as opposed to, if they weren't on their own, and had help from more people. 'by themselves', but a little different. That sentence uses the phrase in a particularly strange way, almost Old English; No one puts that much work into the phrasing of their sentences these days.

    7. Made it out of the house. "Made it" here means "got", or "managed to get". They never managed to leave the burning house. I guess phrasing the sentence with "made it" focuses more on the completion, and success, but you could just as well say "Never got out"

    I had to read that sentence multiple times to understand what's happening there. I almost want to say that this is an incorrect english sentence. "to her". The reason this game is creating so many problems for Nexen is because This game is using quite a bit of more Old English style phrasing. This isn't an exact thing, where I see it and think "oh hey, old english", it's not extremely subtle, but it starts to show after reading a few sentences. It's that the phrasing is much more convoluted and complex than anything you'll see in modern writing. On top of that, this isn't REAL old english, it's a modern day person (who likely doesnt study linguistics), who is trying to imitate old english. That's probably why it says "to her" here, because it doesnt make much sense to me, either.

    Okay maybe not "old english", but the writer is really trying to write complex, and some of the characters seem to have accents, which means they use things like "double negatives". "I ain't never gonna"

    "Dang it" is just a swear. Somewhat similar to блин, I think. Its like a lower level version of "Damn it". (Theres also "darn it")
    That is a VERY extreme accent "It aren't no thing". I don't think even the southern U.S. speaks with that much "twisting" of a sentence. It means "It's nothing". In english, we cant say things like "Can't not laugh"(Unable to prevent yourself from laughing). It's great. But I guess, the more uneducated folk haven't been taught how to use them properly, so they say things like "We don't need no school." What it means: We DO need school...... What THEY mean: We don't need school. (With more emphasis on DONT)

    This one's interesting. "That" is there because...Um... It's a big sentence?... All I can say is, without it, the two halves of the sentence seem shoved into one. Research Clauses, Subjects, and Predicates, if you want to learn about english "commas" ( , ) , and our weird conjunctions, and what makes "that" needed here... "you get", here, means you gain, you obtain the motivation... (This sentence COULD be phrased, much simpler, as "Because there are stronger people around, you get the motivation to improve." OR "You get the motivation to improve, because there are stronger people around."). Starting the sentence with "It's" is what makes the "that" needed. It's saying, if you're surrounded by people that are better than you, you feel like you aren't good, and that you need to "catch up", or you feel like you are behind everyone else.
