But isn't "he had it sung" equal to "he was singing it and finished singing it in the past"?
Maybe I sound stupid 'cause of my poor english, but I was always tought (even by americans) that:
he sang the song
and
the song was sung by him
or
he had it sung
I may be wrong though...
