У меня не было выбора. Я приехал, чтобы преподавать английский а потом они послали мне в Жезказган! Хотя город маленький, это хорошая ситуация для моего русского потому, что нужно говорить или по-русски или по-казахски везде, хочешь не хочешь. I have wound up in Russia, Saint-Petersburg and will be living here for some time, I got stranded here in a professional capacity. Previously I lived in the USA for five years, but was born in France in to a french family. lol.
That lill russian that I know is not much to write home about but almost enough to get by, so I am making out here just fine, hehe.

From all appearances, from what I've seen here, in Russia your rights mean little, and 5-0 always show up three sheets to the wind (well, when I called them, they had beer on their breath) And I mean no disrespect by that, that is just my first (albeit, maybe skewed) impression of Russia. Maybe I will come around as time wears on. lol don't go hard on me please
PS: I wanned to write something in russian but my russian keyboard is on the fritz (i'm infuriated no end, so angry i'm about to go ballistic on it and chuck it out the window ) so I'm gonna hafta wait till i get it back on track so to speak lol (hate to make excuses)

если is of course an obvious one. The исправить/поправить is a bit more subtle. You see Throbert, your version (исправить) while grammatically correct, has a different meaning (smth. like "fix me up"), while поправить has the intended meaning of "correct me (if I'm wrong)". Hope this helps.

I'm gonna hafta take exception with ya on this one, I aksed a friend of mine who happened to be Russian and he called bs on the distinction you just drew. To his mind, there ain't no difference in meaning whatsoever. And I concur with his opinion coz I also did some research of my own and looked both words up and they were used similarly.

PS: "fix someone up" has a rather strong connotation of supplying someone with something, such as a date, as in "he fixed me up with his sis and we're still going on dates". So, "fix me" sounds more in keeping with "to set someone straight", but then on second thought, "fix me up" can be used in that sense too.

I stand by all my misstatements, in the words of G. W. B. Seriously, my version is correct regardless of the number of native Russians telling you otherwise. It is a known stumbling block for many -- indeed, maybe most -- native speakers, just like the notorious "надеть/одеть" distinction and many others. Russian language is rather unusual in that even when the majority of natives insist on some form of usage that does not make it right.
