Thread: Hello!

Hi all! I guess I need to figure out how to write Cyrillic on here. If there's a link, I'd appreciate it!

Anyway, I majored in Russian and graduated from college 11 years ago with a 6 month old daughter. It's 11 years later. I have an 11.5 year old daughter and 5 younger children. I've been busy and haven't spoken much Russian since. Recently, I called a piano technician to check out my old piano to see if it could be saved. The piano technician is very Russian and so I have found myself trying to remember and I'm not remembering much! The technician is very nice and gave me a book of Russian folk songs. (Are any of them in a major key?) He also invited me to come to his church to hear the Russian Orthadox mass. I will sometime. Anyway, I hope I can relearn some Russian here.

Oh, I live in Utah.

If you let us know whether you use a PC or Mac (and what version of Windows or MacOS is installed) someone here should be able to explain to you how to set up your own computer so that you can instantly toggle your own keyboard between English and Cyrillic input.

In the meantime, you can use a "virtual online keyboard," such as this one. Click on the keyboard with your mouse to select letters, or use the keys on your keyboard (but it seems that you have to do one click with the mouse in order to activate the keyboard entry). Then just copy and paste the Cyrillic content into the MasterRussian text-entry window.

Thanks for that virtual keyboard link, but the cyrillic letters do not match up at all to the keys on the keyboard. I remember using a font in college that matched up closely with the english letters. Maybe my dh can fix up a Russian font for me. Also, I could not find "e" (the one which has the same name as that letter) on that keyboard- only short-e. Is it there somewhere?) I found my old Russian textbooks and spent time studying while on vacation. I really want to make my expensive education worth something.

That was painful! My dh fixed me up with the Russian alphabet, but it's the one that doesn't match with the English letters. Being everlastingly cheap, I think I'll just have to tape little Russian letters to my keyboard.

I hope you are using standard qwerty-йцукен keyboard
If you are talking about "и" then it's located on "b" key
The letter "е" is on "t"
If you are talking about "ё" then you might want to punch "~" but it doesn't work on the that virtual keyboard

Thanks! It's all figured out now. I just have to get used to typing in Russian and finding the correct keys. Oh, and relearning enough Russian to write something worth writing to someone who can understand Russian. I managed to set up a piano retuning appointment all in Russian this morning.
