Thread: Hello from Ammonite

Здравствуйте!

I'm Ammonite. I'm 16 years old and living in New Zealand, a native English speaker. I'm from England originally, my grandmother is from Latvia and knew Latvian and Russian but for whatever reason never passed it on to my mother opting to use English only while she was growing up (and man oh man, this really annoys her even to this day haha).

Originally got interested in learning Russian because I adore the Russian alphabet, it just looks so great. Been learning it out of my own initiative in my free time for the last week, it'll be my first and only 'second language'. I've never bothered to learn languages in the past as I've had a sort of anxiety about trying to speak / pronounce another language and failing badly, but I've gotten over that complex now and I'm just going to give it my best shot through patience and refinement.

As far as practical application goes, I don't know a whole lot of people who speak Russian (not that it'd stop me learning anyway heh) though I play quite a few games online where there are Russian players and the language barrier is frustrating! Looking forward to breaking the communication block!

Hello! How do you want to learn Russian? On your own? What textbooks will you use?

Yeah, on my own. I have a friend who is also doing it now, I'm currently using various resources online currently, I've got some software too. Planning to invest in a few books in the not so distant future as well.

EDIT: Oooh looks like I've had an offer of help over Skype as well.

I'm sorry I do not understand. Are you trying to say that there is no better way to learn it than to talk it with a native speaker?
