Привет всем! Меня зовут Алексей. Я родился на Украйна но живу в США. Я некогда не выучил русский язык. Теперь, я хотел бы выучить русский язык. Я буду делать много ошибок. Я желаю улучшить мой знание русского языка и общаться новым людям по Интернету.

Hey everyone! My name is Alexei. I was born in Ukraine, but live in the US. I never learned Russian, but now I'd like to. I'll likely make many mistakes, but it's apart of the learning process, so I'm aware. I wish to improve my knowledge of the Russian language and communicate with new people through the Internet. I wouldn't say I'm looking for a language partner though because I don't really have the time to sit down and do that. I tried many times before and timing always got in the way. Instead, I'd just like to be a part of the community, contribute where I can, and of course learn more Russian! I hope this forum is active. I've tried a couple and they usually seem dead.

* Don't confuse некогда (once, in former times, in the old days) and никогда (never).

Спасибо за помощь! I have a long way to go. Such a long way, heh. To be honest, I didn't even know about некогда. It must have been a typo, because I definitely meant никогда.

Can you help explain your phrase не так уж...?

I'm just beginning in Russian too, but I think Не так уж can be interpreted as " not really " and " много ошибок " is " much mistakes "

correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to mean " not really so many mistakes "

Rouloubole is right: не так уж = не очень.

Спасибо вам оба! I try to translate things literally because it's very difficult to infer meaning from words and phrases you don't know. More often than not, it confuses me. So I see "не так" and think "Not so" literally, but then we have "уж" which is... some sort of particle possibly. It's odd because I don't think there's an equivalent in English. Naturally that throws me off. I guess it's another thing I have to remember instead of question. :P

Rouloubole, How are finding Russian so far? I've been studying for about a year, but it's hard to keep up without any practical application. No one speaks Russian around me.

Rouloubole, How are finding Russian so far? I've been studying for about a year, but it's hard to keep up without any practical application. No one speaks Russian around me.

Wow, I've been studying for about two months. I try to learn new vocabulary, watch series, read a lot ( even if I don't understand, just practicing )

I think I haven't made many progress. I know declensions ( but not how to use cases, so it is a real problem for me, in french, my native language, it seems really weird. And I'm not even so good in French grammar, so it makes it harder. ) , and I know little present tense.

So you probably know a lot more than me ( even though I'm glad to see Russian has a lot of french words ahah ), but so far I find it very cool, and good to learn.

other than that, I hear and practice a little with my friend on skype.

I think you have made progress, especially since you started. I'm still struggling with the cases as well, but it's something you just have keep up with. I don't know much about French, but I do know "Приятно апетита" which came from French no doubt. :P

Russian language has many borrowings from: latin/french/german/english.
Latin - because all european languages did it.
French - because russian nobility in 17xx was under influence of France.
German - because russian nobility in 18xx was ...
English - ... till now.
