Here's the quote, as I've seen it in English (I assume the original was French, but I don't speak French:
Equality is a slogan based on envy. It signifies, "Nobody is going to occupy a place higher than me!"
Here's my attempt to translate:
Равенство -- это девиз, основан на зависти. Означает, "Не следует никому занимать место, выше моего!"
I just want to double-check my translation with native speakers, в случае, если я хочу получить татуировку с этой цитатой по жопе, или где-нибудь (in case I want to get it tattooed across my ass, or someplace else).
(Seriously, as a political/philosophical matter, I think that "liberty" is a much more important goal than "equality." I mean, "equality" is very important as a personal moral ideal -- one should follow the Golden Rule and therefore strive to treat other humans as your peers and equals. But it makes me nervous when the State attempts to guarantee "equality." Я боюсь, что это доведет до вот такого "сказочного" конца: "Да нет, золотая рыба, я не желаю второй коровы; я просто хочу, чтобы все коровы у соседа дохли!")
