I'm looking for friends in California

I am a Ukrainian girl who lives in California. I would like to find American or Mexican friends here. Well, being American or Mexican isn’t necessary. I would like to meet any interesting people.

Hey kalinka_vinnie, we're practically neighbours! I live in Los Altos ( near I-85 & I-280 intersection ) and work in north San Jose. So if you'd like we can have a lunch together (what about this friday?) and chat in russian, what do you think?

I'm from San Diego, and an American that can speak conversational Spanish... Where are you in CA?

What part of Argentina are you from? We had a foreign exchange student from Buenos Aires, and went down to stay with his family for a few weeks... The reason I ask is that everyone pronounced the "Y" sound with "Zh", for instance, I would say "Yo no veo ella", and they would pronounce it like "Zho no veo ezha", (or something like that, I'm not sure about the exact phonetic translation) Is all Argentina like that, or just certain regions?

    good question

    Hey, that question was excellent.

That's one of our trademarks as regards Spanish pronunciation.

Generally in latin American countries the "y" and the "ll" tend to be pronounced as the "y" in words like "you".

In Argentina, the norm is to pronounce "ll" and "y" as the "s" in the English word "vision" or as the "g" in the French word "manger". I don't know if you have that sound in Russian.

In Buenos Aires, though, the "ll" and the "y" are usually pronounced as "sh". So the Spanish word "yo" in Buenos Aires will soung somewhat similar to "shaw" in English.

    Do I make sense?

And by the way, I live in C

    Diego-
Thanks for the clear explanation. It makes perfect sense, it was a little weird to me at first, but I got used to it, and then when I came back, people wondered what happened to my Spanish!
I'd love to visit, but unfortunately, I'm back in the States now, so it'd be more like a 100 hour bus ride now! I may go back, though, someday, so I'll let you know if I do. If you ever want a tour of Tijuana, let me know! (No one in their right mind would!) I live about 15 miles North of the Mexico border...
I'm just starting to learn Russian, but I think the letter "ж" (normally compared to the sound of "s" in Pleasure) would come pretty close in comparison...
