Thread: I am Dimas.

Hello.
My name is Dmitry. My friends call me Dimas. I study English. I’ve already been studying English for one month. And so my English is primitive (I hope this is not for a long time). I am Russian. I am 26.

Меня зовут Дмитрий, но это слишком официально, поэтому мне больше нравится «Дима» или «Димас». Вот уже целый месяц я изучаю Английский. Это было спонтанное решение, которое возникло у меня после того, как я случайно забрел на этот сайт. Увидев людей изучающих русский язык не жалея своих сил я, вдруг, увидел свою жизнь скучной и неполноценной. Теперь я открываю для себя новый мир. Семь предложений на английском языке в начале этого поста– это мой первый неуверенный шаг по этому миру. Черт! Это так сложно!
Мне не хотелось бы просить у вас помощи или навязывать свою. Я хочу просто общаться с человеком который понимает, как мне трудно и который готов терпеть мой английский.

Well Dima though I'm just Russian anyway I'm amazed! Everything you wrote seems to be grammatically correct which is a great progress for a beginner who has been studing a language only for a month! Keep up the good work!

Yesterday I played one thing. I put it in my head and I turned it. Why did I turn it? I looked it over. Why did I look it over? There are two things in this story. I looked for second thing what hid in the first thing what I turned. I found the hidden thing. It is “Yes, I do. Excuse me for my English!”. The first thing is “Dima, do you really think what you have something to tell to English-speaking peoples?”.

There are a lot of beautiful things in the World. There are a lot of ugly things in the World too. The many beautiful things were ugly once and vice versa. I wait for my beautiful English. My English is ugly now.

Спасибо за поправки – это было мило с твоей стороны. Скажи, если я буду продолжать писать Мир с большой буквы, когда я хочу показать глобальный контекст, меня все равно будут считать неграмотным? Все что я налабал в непонятном для тебя посте есть стеб. Видишь ли, когда изучаешь язык, то непременно хочется говорить на нем, а когда говорить не с кем, то начинаешь говорить сам с собой. Пару мыслей о Красоте и безобразии (принципиально с маленькой буквы) я запечатал в топорную форму и был очень доволен собой, ибо месяц назад подобное мне могло только присниться. Да, именно так, если уж я придумываю себе предложения для упражнений, то они точно не про погоду за окном – я стараюсь придумывать только то, что мне интересно придумывать. Вот и все. Жаль, что все равно ничего не смог разъяснить, ну и пофиг! Непонятные вещи несут в себе больше очарования. Хо-хо!

Your english is excellent. And I did actually understand this! Not your typical english paragraph. But very poetic!!! And in a poetic way, it made perfect sense. I hope you're still around the forum and see this post. Very, very good. I only wish I could pick up Russian as fast as you seem to have mastered English. By the way, I am English Canadian from Toronto.

Yes, your English is very poetic, but not widely understandable. I estimate 1 out of every 4 people could interpret your post in the correct context. However, for one month, you're doing quite well. Remember, context is everything.

Yes, I agree, context is important. Yet –

I disagree that only 1 in 4 English speakers would understand this. Their interpretation may differ slightly. But I easily see what Dima meant. I only wish he was still here to confirm as his post is over 1 year old.

An English person would say:

“Yesterday I thought to myself, ‘Dima, do you really think you have something to tell English speaking people?’

After thinking very hard about it, and looking at it from every angle, I found the answer that had been alluding me: ‘Yes, I do! Pardon my English.’”

I still like how Dima wrote it though. As I said before, it seems so much more poetic.

I am discovering that English when translated, translates poorly. A phrase that may be absolutely friendly and polite in English can seem rude when translated into Russian. I’m working on it. We Canadians hate to seem rude

When writing to my new penpal, I started to use a phrase of thanks. When I translated it to Russian, then from Russian back to English to double check it – well, it seemed arrogant and assuming. Eek! I only wish English could translate as poetically as Russian. It would make my learning process so much easier I think.

I agree with all of this, apart from the very last 'thing'. Im english living in Wales UK.
