Доктор экономических наук (д.э.н)
What is English equivalent for the abbreviation д.э.н.). Is there something like Ph.D?

But are you asking about something that is unique to Economics? I guess you can certainly get a PhD in Economics, but it's just like everything else: PhD in Physics, PhD in Politics, PhD in Basket-weaving....

I've always thought that Ph.D is from Philosophy Doctor.Originally Posted by Barmaley

It is. We're weird like that. So, officially, you might take a "Doctorate of Philosophy in Political Science," or a "Doctorate of Philosphy in Mathematics." That would make you a "doctor," even if you know nothing about either medicine or philosophy.Originally Posted by Ramil

It is a legacy system that came into being back in early Middle Ages. Medieval universities had 3 or 4 branches of study in which you could geta degree, including philosophy, medicine and theology. I think there was a fourth branch as well, but I am not sure. Modern English and American degrees reflect this system. You can be a Ph.D., M.D. or Th.D., but not a doctor of chemistry, for instance, because at the time when this system appeared, chemistry did not exist as a separate branch of learning.Originally Posted by Ramil
