What does "the nearest skip" mean?
I've seen the sentence Quote:
I need to sleep where is the nearest skip?
Could I ask what does 'skip' mean there? I've found in Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skip_(container)):
Quote:
The word skip is used for various large open-topped containers, including the load-carrying part of a dumper.
It is illegal to place rubbish in other people's skips.
So this word could be used for any large open-topped container, including backhoes, refuse bins and something what the author of the first quotation meant. But I can't understand what he or she did. In fact the talk was not about a tramp, or was it?

Видела предложение "I need to sleep where is the nearest skip?"

I am confused
Я теряюсь...
Re: What does "the nearest skip" mean?
How about more context? Where does this sentence come from and who says it? Is it a bum/homeless person?
Re: What does "the nearest skip" mean?
The problem is no context there
В том-то и проблема, что нет никакого контекста:

Re: What does "the nearest skip" mean?
nearest skip - nearest kip?
Вполне возможно, если записывалось на слух.
Re: What does "the nearest skip" mean?
Есть тут у вас баки мусорные поблизости? Спать хочу, не могу!
Если он бомж, то это вроде юмор такой.
Is it not?
Re: What does "the nearest skip" mean?
Possibly regional or uncommon slang, because I have never heard the word 'skip' used in any context other than to describe passing over something or running about joyfully.
Re: What does "the nearest skip" mean?
Possibly due to the fact that the words "ship" and "skip" are related to each other, way back in history. My guess is that it's got something to do with either container ships or "shipping" as in transporting something.
Could be way off base but it seems plausible.
Re: What does "the nearest skip" mean?
A skip is the British English word for a large refuse container - dumpster in American English?
I guess someone might say jokingly that they were so tired they would sleep in a skip, or otherwise they might be making a (very indirect) joke about homeless people.

Correct, and sometimes 'dumpster' is capitalized because it's a brand name that in time has become synonymous with the thing itself, like Kleenex or Port-a-loo.
