What does "the nearest skip" mean?

I've seen the sentence

Could I ask what does 'skip' mean there? I've found in Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skip_(container)):

So this word could be used for any large open-topped container, including backhoes, refuse bins and something what the author of the first quotation meant. But I can't understand what he or she did. In fact the talk was not about a tramp, or was it?

Possibly regional or uncommon slang, because I have never heard the word 'skip' used in any context other than to describe passing over something or running about joyfully.

Possibly due to the fact that the words "ship" and "skip" are related to each other, way back in history. My guess is that it's got something to do with either container ships or "shipping" as in transporting something.

Could be way off base but it seems plausible.

A skip is the British English word for a large refuse container - dumpster in American English?

I guess someone might say jokingly that they were so tired they would sleep in a skip, or otherwise they might be making a (very indirect) joke about homeless people.

Correct, and sometimes 'dumpster' is capitalized because it's a brand name that in time has become synonymous with the thing itself, like Kleenex or Port-a-loo.
