TV stations and a little more

Hi!

I'd like to know about TV channels in the U.S. or in UK. But first of all
let me describe the Russian TV stations. I won't tell about cable TV. So
not less than 10 TV channels exist. I mean "ОРТ", "РТР", "Ren-TV",
"Культура", "Спорт", "СТС", "ТНТ", "НТВ", "ДТВ", "Спорт". Ufff...
(Breathing out of my lungs the rest of an air ;-)) I hope I counted all
the non-cable channels.

As a TV watcher I am interested in estimating programs. The best
estimating TV program I've seen is "Неделя (с Марианной Максимовской)". It
goes on the "Ren-TV" channel.

Could someone tell me about TV stations in the U.S. or in UK? What TV
program dedicated to news analysis can you suggest?

Do I understand right that the word "bye" in the end of a letter will be
interpret as "пока" / "good-bye". Should I write something else in the end
in order to say "пока"?

FOX News and CNN are two good stations for news.

"Bye" is informal for " Goodbye"

I always wanted to ask this...

People keep saying that most of the free channels abroad are rather boring (no interesting programs, no movies or documentaries, except of the very old ones, etc.). I wonder is it true? Is it why video rentals and cable channels are so popular? Do they show anything at night or only cable channels are round-the-clock?

In Russia and many of the post-soviet countries most of the free channels air 24 hours a day. They are rather watchable (if you watch TV at all, that is), though there are too many talk shows and other gibberish to my taste. Some of them broadcast the shows from the cable network.

Well, talking about movies... I checked my TV program (and I'm talking only about free, non-cable channels - I have 16 of those). There are more than 50 movies planned for today, mostly Russian/Soviet and American, but there are quite a few European ones, especially French.

Actually I'm surprised there are so many, probably because it's Saturday. In the middle of the week there are no more than 30-40 films per day. Today there are a lot of 70-80th films (including "Scarface", I'll probably watch this one), but most of the films are rather new ("Pirates of the Caribbean", "Bands of New-York", "State 51", etc.).

Right now on air:
films (4 channels)
documentaries (3 channels)
news and political talk-shows (2 channels)
music videos (2 channels),
soccer (2 channels),
comedy and entertainment shows (2 channels)
TV series (1 channel)

Could you tell more about everyday (ordinary) program of your local free channels?

In the UK we only have five non-cable channels.

On air right now...
BBC 1: The Politics Show
BBC 2: How To Murder Your Wife
ITV: Free Willy
Channel 4: Friends
Channel 5: Cattle Drive

We have cable TV, it can be good, but they like to repeat programs numerous times. Additional film & sport channels can be bought as extra packages if you wanna pay for it.

We like soap operas, widely known are:
Coronation Street (ITV), Emmerdale (ITV), Eastenders (BBC 1), Hollyoaks (Channel 4).
Reality TV: Big Brother :roll: (Channel 4), Strictly Come Dancing (BBC 1), I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here (ITV), X-Factor (ITV), Dancing On Ice (ITV). Basically voting for all sorts of things. :lol:

If you want an example of why the rest of the world think America is a nation of ignorant, paranoid, jingoistic brain-washed morons, then watch FOX news for half an hour or so (if you can manage that without gouging your own eyes out). Otherwise save your sanity and avoid it, it'll only make you angry.

Those were the only channels available on the original analogue network, but this is in the process of being phased out completely, having been replaced over the last 5 or six years by a free-to-air digital service that includes about 25 channels. If those are still the only channels you can get, then you haven't been paying attention.

You're talking about the digital switchover? Our region isn't scheduled for this until 2009, Cumbria has already started to receive this service, that's true. Other than that, there's the Freeview box which you can purchase for a one off payment (we have one of those upstairs).

The switchover has been underway for a number of years already. All that has happened recently in Cumbria, and will happen in your region in 2009 is that they will stop broadcasting the old analogue signal, after which you won't be able to receive terrestrial TV without a freeview box. There won't be any new service on that day that isn't already available right now.

Most people have a freeview box now. So saying there are only 5 terrestrial channels is a bit inaccurate.

Anyway to answer the poster's questions.

UK TV:

BBC, the British Broadcasting Corporation, has a number of TV channels. The main two are BBC1 and BBC2, but there is also BBC3, BBC4, BBC Parliament and BBC News 24. It also has lots of radio stations. The BBC has no advertising, it gets its money from the public through TV licensing. Every year every household with a TV has to buy a TV licence.

ITV, Independent Television, is the other main TV company. Its main channel is ITV1, and it has other channels including ITV2 and ITV3.

Channel 4 is a more controversial channel, in that it tends to show more risqu

For years I said I wouldnt get Sky, but did this year as reception for Freeview is not good in my area and I'm glad I swapped.
I watch a Russian news program (news from Russia in english) and loike ITV news. But mainly I watch the history channel, or Paramount for Frazier. :lol:

When I first watched Fox I honestly though it was a spoof news show! :?
