    first cousin once removed

According to cousinship diagram on wikipedia,

File:European kinship system en.svg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

two relations of self can be called first cousin once removed, namely my first cousin's child or one of my parent's first cousin.

Is that correct? Because in the Russian system two different terms would be applied to these two persons.

Yeah that's right. The "degree" (1st, 2nd etc) shows the relationship to the most recent common ancestor, while the "removal" indicates the difference in generation between them.

These terms are hardly used though. You're much more likely to hear a simpler construct like "cousin's son/ parent's cousin" in everyday speech. In fact I'd be surprised if most people even understand the degrees/ removal system.

Thank you, zedeeyen. I was thinking that folks wouldn't use this in real life. What did capture my attention was if fact that two different persons of different generations could be called in the same way, which would be strange in the Russian language.
