Yes, exactly.
Also note such expressions as "his finances / health / school-marks went south", meaning "into decline, downward, got worse".
(Actually, I would say that using "south" to figuratively mean "down" or "under" is probably more commonly heard than using "north" to mean "up" or "over".)
