please help me with this line.
(the actual phrase was "The castle is surrounded by landscapes of immense appeal.")

Does it mean in this case that the landscapes are breathtakingly attractive?
Can any person be described that way? Or only the parts of scenery and nature?

Mmmm.... well, probably.... but it wouldn't be everyday, colloquial language - mind you, it isn't for landscapes either, so you probably could use it for people as well.
Although for people, I would more likely use your "breathtakingly attractive" - sounds a lot better.


No, come to think of it: if you use either of these for people, there's actually a difference in meaning:
You would probably never say about another guy that he is breathtakingly attractive You'd only say that of a person of the opposite sex.

But a person of immense appeal (though I still think it sounds heavy ) could be anyone - someone can be appealing through intelligence, sense of humour, wit, kindness etc...... You don't necessarily have to be attracted to him/her.

Does that make any sense to you? It's hard to explain...

I don't think this phrase would ever be used in speech, only in writing. If you said it in an non-formal situation people'd think you were being pretentious....

"Appeal" is not only physical beauty. For instance, "land with appeal" might also be highly fertile for farming (appealing to farmers), profitable for real estate (appealing to home builders), etc. When I first read that statement, I thought they were talking about real estate value

Whether you say "Immense appeal" about a guy or a girl, it has a very strong meaning. While not _typically_ used in speaking, if you say that about a person it does make sense. I think it has a very poetic quality about it, which makes it seem like you are very serious about your feelings towards that person. So, yes, you can say that about a person
