Do you find it easy to understand this anecdote?

I couldn’t till I got a hint, but when I did it turned out smashingly hilarious.

The meaning is quite obvious, although there is no pluperfect subjunctive in that sentence.

Wasn’t it a little bit funny to hear such big words from a cab driver who should have been a semi-literate emigrant? :)

It would have been hilarious if the driver identified the form correctly. E.g. "But I must confess I have never heard this particular past participle form of that verb."
