    Another couple of questions.

Could anyone help me with the following phrases:

    1. handy dandy
    2. modern language with a handful of object-oriented features and very little leftover gunk
    3. And along came .NET.
My English isn't so good, зато с русским все в порядке ))
I'll be very thankful, if you correct my mistakes.

    1. "Handy" just means useful, and "Dandy" is an older word meaning very good, fine, etc. They don't mean all that much put together; it's something along the lines of "very usefull." "Dandy" is used here mostly because it rhymes with "Handy"

    2. "Gunk" is a colloquialism meaning garbage, junk, debris, etc. In this context, it means that there is very little outdated material in that language.

    3. With more context I could give a better explanation, but this should be good enough. I'm certain the article was describing the way things used to be, and how .NET changed them. So "along came .NET" is another way of saying "and then .NET was invented."

    Hope this helps!

I can only help you with number 1.
    The others I don't understand.

"Handy" meaning "of use in a variety of ways" is the important word in this phrase. "Dandy" meaning "bright, appealing, showy", is just added because it rhymes. The phrase "Handy dandy" is slightly comical or childish.

'very little leftover gunk' - в данном контексте значит что-то типа 'почти без атавизмов, оставшихся в наследство от необъектно-ориентированных языков'

DDT is absolutely correct about number 1. And his explanation sounds prettier than mine

    4. Now Microsoft has so many developers cranking away that it's not enough to reinvent the entire Windows API: they have to reinvent it twice.

    5. Thank You, Microsoft is suddenly realizing that it takes much longer for the latest thing to get out there

    6. managed to -- I remember it has a special meaning, but I can't remember, what ("I'm not sure how I managed to get this far without mentioning the Web")
My English isn't so good, зато с русским все в порядке ))
I'll be very thankful, if you correct my mistakes.

I did not see that you had already beaten me to it, Doc until just now.

    4. На Microsoft сейчас трудится так много разработчиков, что они должны были бы по идее переписать весь Windows API не один раз, а дважды.

    5. Спасибо Microsoft, за то что он внезапно понял, что это занимает намного больше времени, чтобы выпустить новейшую версию [Windows ?].

    6. managed to
    ухитряться, умудряться, получаться сделать что-то

Не знаю, как я умудрился зайти так далеко без упоминания о Вебе.

спасибо (we don't know who he is thanking, but it is not Microsoft. This is probably a response to a question or a comment), Microsoft внезапно понял....

Ты знал, ты знал (с) . Если обратиться к первоисточнику, становится понятно, откуда ноги растут:

... When people get new computers, they're happy to get all the latest Microsoft stuff on the new computer, but they're far less likely to upgrade. This didn't matter when the PC industry was growing like wildfire, but now that the world is saturated with PCs most of which are Just Fine, Thank You, Microsoft is suddenly realizing that it takes much longer for the latest thing to get out there. When they tried to "End Of Life" Windows 98, it turned out there were still so many people using it they had to promise to support that old creaking grandma for a few more years. ...

"Handy Dandy" is just rhyming slang.

    Simply means "Useful".
