All the crew are missing, believed dead. = All the crew are missing and they are believed to be dead.

And missing is an adjective there, isn't it?

You're right. It's in the "style" of US Journalistic writing - a.k.a., newspaper and news headlines. The old journalistic "stylebook" says to separate concepts with commas instead of connecting words like "and."

As for the usage of 'missing,' wiktionary.org says it's an adjective. So you're 100% correct, as far as I can tell.

Hi kidkboom, if you don't mind, I'd suggest to translate your signature phrase "Muddy boots make wise steps" a bit differently:

Literally:
=>Грязные башмаки делают мудрые шаги.

But, that does not really sound natural in Russian, so to make it sound better, I'd suggest to rephrase it a little depending on what you really want to say:

=> Грязными башмаками приходится шагать очень осторожно. (Meaning, while your boots are muddy, you have to be considerate and make very careful steps so as not to spray the mud all over the place making it dirty too.)

or

=> Грязные башмаки располагают к осмотрительности в выборе дороги. (Since you've already made so many mistakes chosing wrong muddy ways, now you can apply your earlier experience and start thinking it through before you start making the new choices.)

Thank you! It's way better your way. I intended it as the second meaning. But when I wrote it, I was trying to write in the style of the old chinese proverbs, which are worded so short. Actually I like "Грязные башмаки располагают к осмотрительности в выборе дороги" best - even better than the original - before the feet were just being wise, but now they're wisely cautious in the choice of the road... Thank you!
