Когда кто-то из взрослых здоровается с группой молодых людей, среди которых есть и юноши, и девушки (например, преподаватель - со студентами, если встречает их на улице) то по-русски он может сказать им "здравствуйте, ребята". А как это по-английски? Children?... Guys?...

Боюсь, они говорят Hello, everybody.)

Guys вполне работает, а children - только если они дети.

You could walk up to a group of women and say "Hey guys".

I think very few people would think it sounds strange, and if they did it would only be because a male said it to a group of females and one of the females is a little touchy on addressing sexes.

But I think a woman could go up to a group of women and say "hey guys, could you tell me where curves is please"? And it would be ok, especially if they knew each other informally.

You can say it to children as well. I would. "Hey guys, you like candy? Want to see the new tint job on my work van?"

Don't forget about the word kids.

If you are more or less of the same age as the group, I prefer "guys". If the group is quite young (e.g. students), then I suggest "kids" is better, but either will work fine.

Kids could even work in a group of adults, but it would be "jokey".

Everybody works anytime, and anywhere, but obviously isn't a translation of "ребята".

I didn't understand the satement (where curves is please?) , but I'm not sure a woman would say "guys" to a group of other women, who she knows informally. I would think she'd say "girls". I have encountered that much more often than your variant..

Curves is a women-only gym, the idea being women can go there and work out without being ogled by the guys and feeling self-conscious.

OooOo! That sounds interesting! I too ask then, where is the nearest curves?

The only time I've heard a woman adress another group of women "Hey girls" was on made for TV cheese movies about the evils of of staying up past 9pm or chewing too much gum causes TMJ!

On the contrary, the only time I have ever heard anyone use this was jokingly.

And I think if you called a group of people "kids" who where over the age of, I dunno? 13? they would probably be pissed off at you.

But maybe all of this is just because I am from America and people grow up faster there, with all our fifty cents wrap musix and every man woman and child owning fully automatic assault machine guns.

Oh, and today I noticed one of our managers said "gals", so don't forget that option too!

Yeah and lasses and lads.

Did you mention them withou irony? I like these words I mean lasses and lads. Will I seem silly using them?

Unless you live in north of Newcastle, you might sound silly saying it anywhere else in the world

I guess it depends on the company.

Nope....we'd say "guys". As in "hey guys, how's it going?" Translation= Hi, how is everyone?

Not sure if anyone answered: "Curves" is an exercise Gym for women only...oops, yes, Grogs did. Lesleyp needs to learn to read English better
