We have very high taxes (about 30 % of the income) but that hardly stops us from afforing Vodka.

Income is one thing. Then there are business taxes, which make income before taxes much lower than in countries with comparable GDP. And that plus the state monopoly on anything with more than 3% alcohol do make vodka very costly in Sweden. Which may be a good thing, granted, and it is actually the way it was designed. The only thing that seems ridiculous is your statement about Swedish vodka drinking habits. I do not talk about illegal homemade stuff that is popular in rural Sweden.
