Thread: не везет

What does this mean besides "Doesn't carry" ?? I often see it thrown into speach but makes not so much sense to me. It has happend a few times before, but it happend like 2 minutes ago when i was talkin to someone on ICQ, and they didn't speak english so i couldn't ask them what it meant. Here is the part of the convorsation...

what... exactly did she mean here? or maybe it was my russian she didn't understand =)))) (yea a girl named max... i dunno )

(Кому-либо) [не] везет is a construction used to mean "[bad] luck." For example:

Мне повезло! I was lucky!
Ему не везет. He's unlucky.

Не везет мне в смерти, повезет в любви.

ohhhh. I always thought повезло was more of an "adult" lucky. I think it's because i haerd a song about a guy and he said he got повезло with his secretary in the office. yes, i know, bad song.

Maybe it has both meanings, like in English! Who can enlighten us?

I can't enlighten you about any double meanings, but I know везёт / не везёт is used all the time in everyday speech as you're lucky / you're unlucky

"Повезло" means "you was lucky". Lucky with whatever.
In Dogboy' case, MAX said "you're unlucky [with weather]".
In the song I suppose "man was lucky [with having sex (or what do you mean "adult lucky")] with his secretary".

There are a lot of "got" expressions in English that mean "to have sex."
Example:

I got lucky last night.
He finally got laid.

There are more, but I can't think of them.

Yes, if you say "i got lucky last night" and that's it. It will always means sex. If you want to say that you were luckywith something else, you would have to mention it. If you said "I got lucky in the casino" it would sound like you had sex in a casino. You would have to say something like "Last night i had all the luck on the machines in the casino", or something like that.

Ну если у них если не упоминать о чём речь, думают о сексе, что тут поделаешь, - тинэйджеры
