Yours were wrong. There should be no "o" between "t" and "k" except for A and N cases.

Declensions like that are common. It is unnecessary to have long words, so the vowel before the last consonant is cut in the declensions of some words. Examples:

молоток
молодец
полоток
рот

called a fleeting vowel. Happens a lot. In the gen plurals the opposite can happen sometimes. девушки---> девушк---> девушек for example. The middle would sound odd (consonant cluster) so an o is usually inserted but in this case it follows the Ш so it has to be an e
