Hello everybody:
" горжусь этим " means "I am proud of it" . I would seem that это would be used in the genitive case " of it". yet , in the list of cases

этим is the in the instrumental case, masculine and neuter singular and plural dative case. I think I am missing the use of the intrumental in this case? why not:

" горжусь этого or эту or это or этих "

The grammatic case in English is differ from grammatic case in Russian for the verb «гордиться». In English it is Genitive, in Russian it is Instrumental. You just need to remember.

From the my side (I'm a native russian speaker) it is very strange to hear the phrase «proud of it». I would like to say «proud by it», but I know that I should say «proud of it».
Why you do not say «proud by it» as in Russian? We do not say «горжусь этого» for the same reason .

I think the clue is in the ending: гордиться is reflexive.

In a grammatical sense, this means that the subject and the object are the same. Literally, горжусь would be something like "I pride myself"... and once you think like that, the instrumental case is the obvious choice.

горжусь этим = I pride myself by it
