When I have something, i.e. a question or an idea or even an object, which is correct to say:

у меня есть....., или я имею.......


and what is the difference between the two statements?

у меня есть вопрос.

There are tons of posts on the difference, do a search and you will get a detailed explanation. Short, it is more normal to say у меня есть while it is more offical and bookish to say имею

This is a question that always comes up... and I am always very interested to hear people's opinions. Good job on answering and suggesting a search, Vincentz, I like that. I was part of another forum that when a new person asked a question that had been asked, a lot of people would say things like "Try that button marked 'search'" or something similar. It's advantageous to new people to see these answers, and very helpful to people like myself also... Sorry, I got a little emotional there. I LOVE ALL OF YOU!!!

У меня есть квартира, машина и дача.

Или

Я имею квартиру, машину, дачу.

Разницы почти никакой. Разве что "я имею" звучит более официально.

Но в неформальной речи есть ещё одно значение, которое соответствует известному слову на букву f, которое пишут на заборах.
Можно сказать:
-У меня есть подруга/друг.
А если сказать:
-Я имею подругу/друга,
то хорошо воспитанные люди будут улыбаться, а плохо воспитанные- будут дико хохотать. Поэтому оборотов со словом "иметь" в обыденной речи лучше избегать.

Это был бы номер!
Если б конь имел меня-
Я б наверно помер.
