I don't understand a few things in Crime and Punishment, things like the yellow passport. What is Dostoevsky referring to? Is it supposed to be obvious and am I just stupid, or what? Is it because of the translation? Help, please!

hmm...I would help you but I gave up after 50 pages of this book
It was one of the choices for summer reading and I started reading it and I was a lil bored, lol I also have a russian copy of the book and I got further in the russian copy. The translation I had was pretty good, so I guess you just have to find somebody who knows the book, hehe

As far as I remember, yellow passports were registration cards issued to prostitutes by the police.

If you don't understand something else, ask away.
Thanks, guys. I thought that it probably was something to do with that, but I wasn't sure. I'm re-reading it ( I read it last year, don't remember much) so if I come across something else, I'll be sure to ask. Thanks a bunch!
