Well, kidsbook doesn't always mean easy reading, imho.

Try that site of Russian kids magazine. There a lot of short fiction and non-fiction stories, poems, tales etc. Yeah, and pictures!

Or did I get you wrong and you need "learning Russian" kidsbooks?

I think Steffi wants to start from the beginning by learning as a child would learn to read, write and speak in Russia.. 1st grade, 2nd grade etc... and progress from there... not a bad idea IMO ...
How I wish, how i wish you were here. Were just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl. Year after Year. Running over the same ground, have we found, same old fear. Wish you were here.

I already know russian, but I forgot so much..that is unbelieveable! I have had it 7 years at school..

And hear in Iceland I often read the schoolbooks from my aupairkids, mostly the one form the girl from the second class..
and even if their are some things I don*t understand than I just look at the pictures..that is why I asked for kidsbooks.

    Be careful!
Some russian fairy tales contain some arсhaic poetic words!

Read to read russian translation of foriegn tales which can be familiar to you
    For example HC Andersen's tale
    The Princess on the Pea

You may be interested in funny and well illustrated books called Smeshariki (Смешарики), you could probably find them on ebay. They are very popular (among adults too ) here in Russia. You'll find them easy to read and understand, another plus - modern language used.

Oh yes, Smeshariki is a great series of cartoons. They were re-named "GoGoriki" in the US and "Kikoriki" in Germany. I enjoy them immensely even though I'm an adult. I suppose they are similar to Winnie-the Pooh in some ways but they also seem to have a more modern, adult-type humour sometimes, like "Sponge Bob" but softer. And there's always a moral.

    from wiki:
The Smeshariki (the name is derived from "smeshnye" meaning "funny", and "shariki" meaning "little balls") are stylized rounded animals. Each of the 10 characters has a unique personality and a range of interests with no negative characters among them. Plots are built not on the battle of opposing forces but on the unexpected situations the animated characters stumble upon in their interactions deemed similar to the ones that children may encounter in their everyday lives. Much attention was devoted to the humor in the series, some of which has attracted adults as well.
Alice: One can't believe impossible things.
The Queen: I dare say you haven't had much practice. When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.
