In many European languages which use the Roman alphabet(Polish and German for example), "w" is pronounced like "v." Perhaps your boyfriend's family is Polish? Many Polish names have the ending "-ow." However most Russians I've seen with the ending -ов who migrate to English-speaking countries transliterate their names with "-ov."
