I'm a bit confused about the usage of full names and short names (I'm not sure if this is the right way to call them, what I mean is for example Александр vs. Саша). When would you introduce yourself with your full name, and when with your short name? And if someone introduced himself/herself with his/her full name, would it be considered impolite if you use the short name? When do you switch from one to the other?
It would be great if someone could shed some light on this...
Unfortunately, I don't think there is a quick and an easy answer. It depends on several different factors such as absolute age and the age difference between the two of you, situation (formal vs. informal), upbringing, personal preference, etc.
Generally, if you feel yourself equal with another person you choose your way. The other person might switch to a short version if he/she feels as he/she can call you ты. If the other person is substantially older than you he/she might choose how to call you including whether to call you Вы or ты. And BTW, the short version can be used for both. In some cases this might cause rebellion :) Not all of us like tutoring tone.
If you are trying to achieve more respect to yourself in a more formal situation you should introduce yourself with the full name, perhaps even with the patronymic...

I understand that it's not a simple rule when to use which, but maybe you could just give some examples of situations?
The simplest rule is to follow what your interlocutor suggests. After introduction ritual, for example.
You address your boss with a full name and patronimic, you address your friend with a short name, you address a child with a short name, you address an adult the way this person introduced himself/herself. An unfamiliar adult is usually addressed вы, a child is usually - ты.Quote:
