Derivations, nicknames, etc

HI everybody, I'm new to the forum ... I'm a professional writer and my main character for a current story is from Russian ancestry. His name's Yuri. I know that the nickname for him would be Yura, but a friend also told me that a more familiar form of the name would be Yurochka. Is this true?

I look forward to spending some time here as I write this novel, as I'm sure I'll continue to have questions :D

[Like, for instance, some Russian swear words :D ] For the character...not for me. I know to ask these in another forum as well... 8)

EDIT: The character's full name is Yuri Mikhailovich Kirov... I think this is the proper form?

Yurochka is too caressing name. Or it may be a little derogatory, as looking from highly above. I think only the closest friends and relatives may use it freely.
Yuri Mikhailovich Kirov is OK.

Юрий sounds fine to me. It depends on your story, because Юрий is formal but using it without patronimic or surname makes it less so. How do you want your character to appear in the story?

Yurochka (Юрочка) is how a fat wifie would call her effeminate poof of a son. A deminutive but in no ways pansified version of the name is Yurik (Юрик). At least that's what lads would say.

I thought Pasternak referred to Yuri as "Yurochka" occasionally in Doctor Zhivago.

Such connotations may well have been different in Pasternak's time. Nowadays "Yurochka" sounds too effeminate.

Ok another fiction writer here, but of a more lowly genre.
In my fanfiction a Slavic character is being intimate with Severus Snape and i need to construct a nickname for Snape.
i get the impressoin that Sevrochka would be the equilavnt of Sevvie-kins so i want some thing more resepectful. I have thought of some but idon't want them to be too gooey.
i like Veshka (using hte middle syllable) is this silly and are there any other ones i could use? i's prefer to use the middle syllable it sounds less contrived.

Well, in the Russian translation of Harry Potter, Snape is called Снегг. So she should definitely call him Снегурочка. :wink:

May be he'll want to be Весик, Севрик, Снейпон (rather vulgar and colloquial).
If it is HER (may be lover?) who calls HIM, let it be Весик. Sounds stupidly caressing enough.

I don't think "Pravit" is a kind of name which makes good nicknames.
Правитик sounds stupid, and Правичок resembles "Новичок".

My name is Kristina and from what I gather, it is reasonably common in russia (its on the list of widely used girls names on this site). I was wondering if it has a diminutive. When I was born, my Grandparents wanted me to have a diminutive and amongst my family and russian friends I am called Kristya. I was wondering if this a common diminutive for Kristina and if not, what is? Also my sister is named Natalia, I know that Natasha a common diminutive for it but it is common for that then to be shortened to Tasha, because that is what she is called like I am called Kristya.

Hi Kristina.
You name is very beautiful and it is becoming more and more popular in Russia. And mostly after we've got this famous singer Kristina Orbacaite who is a symbol of elegance among Russian teens. I think the reason why your grandparents called you Kristya was that it's very common in Russia to give babies and children diminutive names by adding the suff (Kristinochka, Kristulenka, Natik, Natulik, etc.). But you are a young lady now and it's more approppriate to be called Kristina, let alone that the name is very mysteriuos by itself and it definitely derived from the name of Jesus Crist. I'm sure that the name Kristya will sound funny and not attractive for Russian teens as well as Tasha. If you want to socialize in Russia use your real name Kristina and Natasha, believe me it's cool.

Her name is Natalia, her diminutive has been diminutised!!

I am sure there are many other things like that I would like to know so please anyone help if you can.

My friends have never called me Kristya, with the exception of my best friend, Vika.

Could I just use my Dutch nicknames and diminutize them по-русски? Like Jasp, Kasper, Flaps (sister), Jazz (father), Jabber etc. :)
