Thread: Щи да каша, пища наша

Soon I get to go to Moscow for a short trip
I've read about икра, сметана, борщ, шашлык и пельмени but does anyone have any recommendations for a traditional taste of Moscow cuisine What foods and dishes should I try - I've only got a few days, but hey, nothing like having a choice What about the location of a 'not too expensive' restaurant near the centre that provides traditional dishes? Any advice greatly appreciated.....

Щи да каша, пища наша

The Art Cafe. It is located almost directly across the river from Храм Христа Спасителя, I think the street is either берсеневская or софииская. It is next door to a small theater (not in the tour books). I think there is a sign on the building but not on the door. Go in the main door and directly upstairs 1 flight.
It is a cozy 1 room cafe with wood paneled walls and white lace curtains. The lace covered tables by the windows have a beautiful view of the river and cathedral (breathtaking at sunset).
The food is very reasonable, $8-$10 each including 1st+2nd course, beer or wine and tea. The food is all delicious choices of Russian and Georgian cuisine. One of my favorie 1st courses is a dark bread toasted then covered with melted Georgian cheese. This is not a tourist place so no one speaks English, but the waitresses are very nice and helpful.
Avoid restaurants near tourist spots in the city center. VERY expensive (some will charge you $5 for a cup of tea!) and not friendly. Some of the best food and most reasonable prices can be found at the cafes in the parks. There are also lots of food and beer stands at the parks where you can have a great lunch while enjoying the fresh air for only a few $.

The title of this thread made me think of something Garmonistka said a long time ago when I was asking about Belorussians. Мало водки мало закуски это не по-нашему это не по-беларусски!
