    Food

    Hi,
I wanted to know if there are any dishes I should be sure to try when I am in Russia. Any recommendations of restaurants that sell good cheap food? Also I dont drink, will there be soda available in all restaurants? Thanks

As has been established by pundits on this forum (no names no packdrill), there are no such places in Russia. Also, there hardly is such a thing as the Russian cuisine. What little there is of it is vomit-inducingly plain. Russians feed their faces with greasy kotleti, watering them down with galons of vodka. Correction - the posh blokes drink vodka, common peasants drink samogon (moonshine). All nice food in Russia is foreign. Restaraunts in Russia do not sell cheap and good food. They either sell cheap food (Russian) or good food (foreign).

Now, if you're teatotal you should never cross the threshhold of a Russian restaurant. Soda water will definately not be provided (this concept is alien to all Russians including muggins here) and chances are that you will be made fun of on account of your teatotalness... If there's a cabaret sort of thing going on, the waiter will tip off the microphone bloke and he'll point in your direction and announce to everyone that there's a silly foreigner present who doesn't want to drink alcahol. No Russian lady will ever dance with you after that.

To sum it all up - all you've heard about Russia is true. If I were you, I wouldn't be thinking about what restaurants to dine at, I would be thinking about how to deal with them brown bears in the streets. (Have you heard that the mafia are training bears to attack foreign visitors?)

Actually you can get soda in some places (in big shops mainly). In most cases it is Coca-Cola or Fanta (and I've never seen minelar water in shops, but sometimes it is shown on TV). Small shops and restaurants don't like to sell any sorts of soda because drinks without alcohol are very unpopular in Russia. And don't try to buy Russian juice! All sorts of juice produced in Russia contain small amount of alcohol (10-15%).

But everyone eats caviar with every meal. Caviar is cheaper and more plentiful than fruit or vegetables. I ate caviar every day for breakfast while I was there.

I want to visit USA some day but I want to be sure are there some vodka and caviar in the restaurants? Also, I want to know is it necessary to dress like a cowboy with a Colt if I go to McDonalds? And what should I do with my favorit AK-47, I love it so much, I've killed with it 40 bears, how can I bring it in the USA in a legal way?
PS. I'll miss bears hunting so much, where can I get licence to shoot indians and how much does 1 scalp cost now?

    totally uncalled for

that was a rude post.. i just wanted to know if russia had a specialty dish.. if someone went to the middle east , he would try their makluba, if you went to greece you would try baklava, if you went to italy u would try pizza.. there was no insult intended. and i havent drank alcohol and i dont intend to and i just wanted to know if it would be a problem there. as for asking for a cheap place to eat, if you had asked me before you came to the usa, rather than be sarcastic, i would reply that you should stick to fast food restaurants because they are cheaper or be sure to stop at ocharleys because their steak is worth the price. thanks for your comment, but it wasnt needed. i hope that all people i meet in my visit arent as nice as you.

You see, saying this you implied that all the Russians do is drink alcahol, otherwise how can getting a glass of soda in a restaurant be a problem?
It was this that brought about such comments.
