@alexei - that's brilliant, thanks very much. You get a real sense of just how big Russia is when you start surfing around a map of the country.
I have just started learning the us of 'на' и 'от', например, 'Москва на юге от Петербурга'. My Russian teacher does not know the location of towns in Russia very well because, she explains, when she was a young person in Russia, she was not likely to travel anywhere!
Oh, don't mention it!
I think to completely realize how big Russia is, it's better to buy a big paper map and hang it on the wall.
