my fathers job is sending him to some island off the coast of russia..
any one know of any islands?
All i know about the place is that its barren and a frozen hell..
i would just like to know because Id probably have to spend some time there.

Probably Sakhalin? Does he work in the oil business?

it is the sakhalin islands..i knew it started with an "S"..

Tell him that all the inhabitants there are decendants from Russian prisoners (murderes, thieves, etc.) and that he should keep looking east, in case Japan decides to take back their part of the islands. According to this line, I don't think it's Sakhalin. It's more like some islands in Arctic Ocean. May be somewere in Shtokman field area (Barents Sea):

I know it's about gas, but the area has a plenty of oil deposites too.

It can't be stockman, they haven't selected the contractors yet!

Sakhalin is located in Pacific Ocean several thousands kilometers away from Siberia and the climate there is rather temperate. Far East and Siberia are different separate regions.
BTW, I didn't tell that it can be Stockman gas deposit. I heard somewere that they have several oil contracts in that area signed.
