Thread: Learning Russian with free online ressources ?

Hi all !

I'd really like to learn Russian but I don't want to buy books etc. As I am a real computer freak, I think it will be easier for me to learn in front of a computer. So my question is: do you think it is possible to learn Russian with free online ressources only ? Anybody did/does it ?

I think it's possible but hard and your knowledge will basically revolve around listening, reading and writing skills while the speaking skills will suffer.

Only for the basics. You'll learn about 300 words, not more. Then you'll get fed up. It's far more efficient to use a normal book. (and which one does uncle Jasper recommend, little children? )

Are you learning Russian specifically for a business or tourist trip to Russia? If so, I found a cheap little paper back phrase book for travelers by BARRON'S helped me at first. Even without hearing anyone speak the language, I learned pretty good pronunciation from their phonetic spelling.
I also created my own curriculum when I taught fellow team members prior to a trip we took to Russia from our university.
If you really don't want to buy ANY books, I could send you a copy of my Beginner's curriculum. I would not charge anything. Let me know if you're interested!

In my experience attempting to find online resources for learning foreign languages has been generally unfruitful. I remember earlier I would search again and again on Google for "Learn Arabic Online Resources" and eventually I just ended up buying a book.
