Thread: new!

I'm totally new to russian, im 13 years old (so bare with me), I clearly have never had a go at another language with different letters so i'm looking forward to it! I don't know where to start though.

I'd start with getting a good, well-rounded course book. Make sure it has audio, or get an all audio program too, such as Pimsleur (although it's rather expensive). Start with learning the alphabet. Since I know you are going to ask how to type in Russian, here is a site that should explain everything. If you have any questions, feel free to post them here on the forum.

How does everyone feel about the Living Language course? That's the one I have (the beginner's version). I'm just finding it very difficult to pronounce words. It's so totaly different from English.

I used the living language course, and I didn't see anything wrong with it. The only problem is it doesn't teach you the alphabet, but there are some good online resources one can use.

Don't worry if you can't pronounce words now. With practice, it will get easier.

Well it does technically, but I don't think it does a very good job. Firstly, it takes a disgustingly large number of chapters, so in the beginning, you're forced to rely on a small chart in the front of the book.

Yeah, I was two days into the course before I even got to Он, Она, and Оно! But as far as I can tell it's a pretty good course. Now if I can just find time away from my Spanish, German, French, and Italian to study it.

lol. I don't have any money currently, I am good at pronounciations to I don't need to worry to much about that . Thanks for the info so far!

If you're short of money, there are a few good online resources around that I have found very helpful in starting. Gave me a bit of a foundation before I got into it. Here a couple of my favourite links. Good luck!!
