You can easily hear / see whether it's Russian or Ukrainian without knowing either. The difference is as pronounced as perhaps Italian vs Portuguese or something like that.
Ukrainian has the sound "h" in it. It also has the sound "ä", which is AE joined together.
Russian when spoken in a standard accent, as in the news or on TV, has no "h" or distinctive "ä" sound. Note: Russian allegedly has no accents! So everybody speaks the same way. However the one distinction is that some people in Ukraine and Belarus say "h" instead of "g" in some words. You won't hear that on TV though.
Written Ukrainian uses an i with TWO dots on it. Russian doesn't use this letter.
Written Ukrainian also uses "Э" but turned in the other direction. Russian shows this letter turned the opposite way to a normal E.
Russian uses "И" and "Ы" which I don't think Ukrainian uses.
You can go to the Ukrainian section on this forum to see what written Ukrainian looks like.
With this information you should be able to determine whether something is in Russian or Ukrainian despite not knowing the language.
Or better yet, start studying Russian and you'll quickly learn to tell it apart from Ukrainian!
Here is a Russian news channel that streams live online.
