Hello vbouldr, welcome to the forums...
Tell us about yourself. Why exactly did you pick Russian? What do you know about it? How old are you? Do you know any other foreign languages?

I would recommend you buy some sort of Russian book for beginners and maybe a dictionary. It IS possibile to learn through the net or a forum, but it's really a pain for both involved, and through a book is much easier. If you can get yourself a book and ask questions when problems arise, your learning will be accelerated greatly.

    me Me ME

    hmmm, Well, I'm 21 I live in Orlando,FL
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candle lit dinners, basking next to an open fire....
ohh ok, My real hobbies are rock climbing, digital video (goes hand in hand with climbing cause most of my videos are climbing videos). Computers, ultimate frisbee, slackline (if you don't know, which most people probably won't, goto www.slackline.com). I just got married and I am a very strong Christian.
Well, that is all about me.....now why I chose Russian. The truth is I don't know I was in middle school and just became facinated with it. I think it sounds beautiful and there is just something in general about the culture, language, and country that is just alluring.
What I have learned so far is the alphabet (took me a while) and some simple words/phrases (not many though). Reading through the forum I found out about vocabulary master so I got that yesterday and started there with vocab. Don't know any gender, case, spelling, declention, conjugation, etc yet but like I said I'm just starting. Hopefully you guys will notice an improvment over time.
I am going to pick up a book, anyone have a suggestion on which book is the best to learn from? I was just going to see what my college uses for Russian 1 and pick that up.
    later guys

Aha, nice to meet you vbouldr! You mentioned liking Russian in middle school, it's funny because that is also the same time I became interested in this language and started learning it. How did you come into contact with it in middle school? When I was in middle school I was doing a project over a spy novel and learned the cyrllic alphabet, that intrigued me so I went and bought an old Russian textbook...

I agree with your idea of picking up your college's Russian textbook, I learned mainly from an old college textbook too, they have in general less bullshit(pardon) and get to the point. Also have a lot of good exercises, vocabulary, etc.

Mr. hazel, welcome, how old are you friend and why do you want to learn Russian? You want to know how to begin learning Russian? I believe a certain Mr. Vbouldr asked the same question quite recently...

I've said it and I'll say it again: Nicholas Brown - New Penguin Course, Nicholas Brown - Learner's Dictionary.
Search for them on Amazon. They're perfect. Those, and Robert Beard's site.
