Have you tried using this mod? I don't know much about running a forum but the reviews look good, and it might help stop some of the spammers...

I still think that requiring to input captcha for the first 10 posts of a newly registered user is no big deal for a human user but will probably stop the spammers from posting too much. Even if they do it manually (captcha will stop all the bots) they will need to input captchas and thus - this will make it more time consuming.

Yes. Also you could block new users with a low number of posts, or who have only been registered for a short time, from posting external links.
