Off topic - Linux in Russian

I know this is probably really off topic, but i'm fascinated by this:-

I installed asp linux in russian, and yet it's only the KDE / gnome that is in the russian language, and there is still english things all over the place. Is this a common problem, or is there just no pure russian / other language versions of linux.

I'm going to try a red hat and mandrake install and see how that goes, but I would have thought that when one selects a language, that every thing is in that language. What use to a russian is the start up text if it's in a language that they can't under stand !!

Is this also the case in M$ Windows?

When I was installing Red Hat Linux 8.0, there was an option for Russian. I didn't use it though and installed everything in English. I guess it would work all right.

It depends on what has been translated. If you select your system to Russian, it will use Russian whenever possible. But in cases where no Russian translations have been provided, English will need to be used.

It is probably assuming most users aren't going to use the terminal, but will select xdm or another graphical login manager. You can change the localization so that everything is in Russian if ASP Linux supports it. FreeBSD does, and so I have a user that I play around with in which everything on the screen is Russian. The only downside is if you run terminal programs that use ASCII art (BitchX) or extended characters (sysinstall) for borders then the art is distorted by the change in character encoding.

Hmm. That would make it very hard for people who work on the command line and don't know english.

I would have hoped ASP linux would have had a bit more translation done than red hat, partuculary because heres ASP's home page.
