It's easy to turn off if you don't want to use it. Click the cogwheel icon in the window that lists all the users. Then select "Turn off". The chat will remain off even if you revisit the forum.

Doesn't work on a mobile phone. I can see the chat, I can enter a string into the edit line, but can't submit it (neither in the bottom of the page nor in a separate window). The phone has a touchscreen (no real buttons) so it needs the visual submit button.

Another point is that the chat now causes the phone to reload the forum page quite frequently and this in turn leads to repainting the forum page totally every few seconds. (It repaints the whole page not only the chat sub-window). This makes reading the forum posts quite boring.

I turned it off for mobile.

Ahhh. it is a two step process here... you have to click on the green plus sign first and that opens up yet another chat window and in THAT window click on the cogwheel and turn off the chat.. got it.

Now what if I don't mind seeing the chat but I just don't want my name listed as being online? Example... I see the chat and really don't want to get involved but then I do see a question I can quickly answer so I figure.. okay I'll hop on ans answer it and then hop off again. Any way of just not having your name as being online?

If you turn the chat off, your name shouldn't be seen online and nobody can chat with you.
