Thread: Russian lolcats

Hey guys!
I run a website http://lolkot.ru and thought you might find it interesting.
If you are familiar with lolcats (and most of you will be) then you already know what it's going to be about.

We don't translate English jokes there so most of them are going to be Russian in every way possible (I can't speak for every single picture because different people make jokes). I have some experience with this kind of material (Russian jokes) and audience (English speakers interested in learning Russian), so I will be glad to explain what those jokes mean.

I try to post extra material if a joke requires some knowledge of Russian history and culture.

No, not really.

Lolcat (от LOL и англ. cat — кот) — смешная фотография кота или кошки (а впоследствии и любого другого животного, или неживого объекта), подписанная каким-либо текстом юмористического характера. Часто в подписи специально допускают ошибки.

However, most of the lolcats are now being made by other people. So, technically, the website is run by whoever wants to be a part of it.

Haha, that's a pretty interesting way to put it. I'd say "Lolcats - коты, которые заставляют тебя умирать со смеху."

It's brilliant.

I don't think kotomatrix can/should be called lolcats. They are pictures of animals with captions that merely describe those pictures. I visit it once in a while and can never understand why people like it. The same thing happens when my friends visit kotomatrix. Perhaps it's an age thing and that website is visited mostly by kids?

On lolkot.ru pictures have short stories behind them, something that may make you think for a while. To me, kotomatrix is not competition. They make emphasis on quantity, we make emphasis on quality, and we also have different goals.

Lots of cats, but no manuls? )
