It shouldn't matter what language it is, after all, if you know this language.

That's quite funny, because it was a favourite forwarding message some weeks ago in Holland as well ("Vleogens een oderzonek aan een Eglenhsce uiseviteirnt..."). I could understand nearly every word in the Russian version quite fluently, the only ones I didn't know were words I wouldn't have known if they had been in the correct order either.

I bet they won't be able to translate it into Chinese.

Maybe they can do it with sentences? Or with paragraphs

Perhaps they could do it with similar looking elements of their complex characters... but I don't think it's possible. Replace one element and the whole meaning is changed.

I'm surprised at how long it took me to realize that that's what they did in the Russian version. I thought it was just a whole bunch of typos!

I make no apology for dragging this beauty out from the Forum annals - Thanks for pointing me in the direction of this one Friendy, it's brilliant

I reckon this is the test to test ones understanding of a language at any particular level. That is, if you can read the mixed-up text, then you can say that you have acquired that language to that level of difficulty - maybe

The Russian remains a jumble of letters and reinforces my sense of just how much I must learn before I know anything

Well, I wouldn't go that far Mike, but certainly it's a good test of passive vocabulary (reading) level, and what's more, it's fun
I found there were 2 or 3 words I didn't know. There was only one that I knew, which I struggled to read: первая, for some reason. Other than that I could read it at normal speed.
I think MA hit it on the head; if you know the word already, you'll be able to read it.
