Attempt at poetry?

Hello everybody!

I wrote - or, rather, tried to write - a poem in Russian. However, my knowledge of Russian is still somewhat rudimentary. I was hoping someone here could critique my work a little bit... You don't have to worry about offending me, as I know I'm not a good poet in this beautiful language.. though I daresay I'm good in my own tongue. :smilegrin:

Here goes: - "Уже видели" ("Deja Vu")

Я лодке без воды, лошадь без поля
Во сне, я слышу мои предки, воя
Знакомые вещи здесь видеть
Знакомые эти не должны быть
Я помню ещё до моего рождения
Я знаю аромат, как древние каждения
Лошади в снег, огонь, луна
Размытые мечта на границе ума
Я помню ещё до моего рождения
Я слышу словы, как святится моления
Невозможные вещи, моей воспоминания
Слезы, стения, последнее свидания

Please let me know if I've made any mistakes or if anything sounds silly... I already know that "videt' / byt' " is not an exact rhyme but I couldn't figure out a way around that one.. I don't know if Russian poetry allows for "fudged" rhymes (rhymes that only somewhat rhyme) but there's a lot of that in American poetry.. This is a poem about why I study Russian ..

Here goes: - "Уже видели" ("Deja Vu") Уже видели - Russians would say "Дежа вю", or just without translation 'Deja vu'

i tried to correct the grammatical mistakes, these are mostly endings.

in some lines the meaning is somewhat vague, and if you could translate it into English, we could offer you some more corrections.
If you start translating it into English you will notice that you chose quite difficult words).

Regarding 'fudged' rhymes, we do have them)), good 'fudged' rhymes are good for any poetry in any language i think.

I really like it. It creates a certain mood, and that's what poetry should do. Great job!

I tried to make some "poetic"corrections, so I made a few assumptions that might have been wrong. As alexsms said an English version could help.


Я - лодкa без воды, лошадь без поля, [I believe you tried to say "I'm a boat..." as opposed to "I'm in a boat"]
Во сне, я слышу, мои предки, воя [воя requires some action after it, i.e. something that your ancestors did while howling. Otherwise the phrase seems truncated)]
Знакомые вещи здесь видят [so if that's what they do (see familiar things) it should be "видят" - plural. If you want to say that YOU see familiar things it will be "вижу", but it does not rhyme and the problem with "воя" will remain]
Которых здесь не должно быть [=which (things) should not be here]
Я помню дни до моего рождения [or any other noun - всё, события, etc.]
Я знаю аромат, как древние каждения [unknown word "каждения"]
Лошади в снегу, огонь, луна,
Размытые мечты на границе ума [or maybe в закоулках ума - sounds poetic enough]
Я помню дни до моего рождения
Я слышу слова, как святые моления [= like holy prayers]
Невозможные вещи, мои воспоминания [=my recollections]
Слезы, стенания, последние свидания [стенания=cries, moans]

Familiar these things should not be [i.e. "These things should not be familiar" w/Latin-esque sentence structure]

I remember before I was born
I know the smell, like ancient incense
Horses in snow, fire, moon
Fuzzy dreams on the border(s) of the mind

I remember before I was born
I hear the words, like hallowed prayer
Impossible things, my memories
Tears, wailing, a final goodbye


I suppose a lot of it doesn't quite come off like that.. but, is "kazhdeniya" not incense? (Translator threw me a wrench? :) )

Actually it's easily fixed with "мои предки воют" - my ancestors (are) howl(ing).

Ah, I see. :) Incense (as in church) is ладан or фимиам (if it's a noun) and "кадить" or "курить фимиам" (if it's a verb). A process of incensing is "кадение". I guess "каждение" can be used too, I just did not recognize it in this context. It does not look good with adjective "древние".

I think that what you need here is "курения" (which is sort of incense too, but not necessarily in church).

here what i came up with,

i retained all your rhymes so that less changes be made in poetry, but correct ed grammar and use of words


Я лодка без воды, лошадь без поля
Во сне я слышу, как мои предки воют
Знакомые вещи здесь видят
Знакомыми они не должны быть
Я помню ещё до моего рождения
Я знаю этот аромат, как древние каждения (as you have the smell here, I added этот)
Лошади в снегу, огонь, луна
Размытые мечты за гранью ума
Я помню ещё до моего рождения
Я слышу эти слова, как святое моление
(the most common word is «молитва», but you have the rhyme here)
Невозможное, мои воспоминания
Слезы, стенания, последнее прощание

You see,

‘Impossible things’ became «невозможное». You can say «невозможные вещи», but it’s not very poetic. And when you use ‘thing’ in English, we tend to use impersonal grammatical structures, e.g. ‘I don’t like this thing’ will likely translate «Мне не нравится это».

final goodbye – последнее прощание. The point is when you say Good bye! (see you, see you later) it will translate «до свидания» (literally, ‘till meeting’). But here in your last line ‘goodbye’ is a noun, thus, it will translate «прощание» (a farewell).

To make it even clearer, «свидание» mostly means ‘rendezvous’ or ‘date’. Например, «у меня свидание» (i have a date), but it can also be used as «деловое свидание» which becomes ‘business meeting’ (no sexual connotation).

каждение - censing, incensing. "Каждение" derives from "кадить" (literally swing a censer "кадило" suspended from chains towards something or someone, typically an icon or person). So it's technically like a gerund. The letter "ж" drops out for no evident reason to me, the word is very old and used only in church terminology (we have such tricks in Old Russian, when letters drop out).

I totally agree. Your poem reminded me of another one I read a while back. Off the top of my head, here is [probably just a part of] the poem:

В этой части Вселенной бывал я когда-то,
А иначе - откуда б мне были знакомы
Невесомая, алая кромка заката
И стога золотистой и ломкой соломы.

Сумрак дальней тайги, туча в небе глубоком,
На развилке - часовня, глядящая слепо.

Way to go! One of the best techniques (in my opinion) to absorb the language is singing along, vocalizing/imitating.

Мне кажется, пение не лучший вариант. Язык при пении искажается: плывут ударения, долготы и краткости гласных, про тона я не говорю.

Спроси у Rockzmom, как её муж научился говорить по-английски.

Понятно. Но гораздо лучше повторять стихотворения. Испытал на себе. Несколько раз прослушал и записал небольшое стихотворение на ирландском, сказали, что есть лёгкий акцент. Прочитал текст самостоятельно (без прослушивания) - сказали "довольно слабенько"

мм.. зомечятельные стехи.

О, разрешите и я представлю свой вариант в слегка модифицированном виде (навеяло просто),

"Дежа Вю"

Лодка без воды, жеребец без воли,
Слышу во сне, как предки воют
Вижу, кругом знакомо мне всё
Хотя, знакомо быть не должно

Будто ещё до моего рождения
Вкусил аромат древнего причащения
Кони в снегу, дым, огонь и луна,
Лязг доспехов, сжимаю древко копья

Будто ещё до моего рождения
Я слышал твой шёпот святого моления
Запах волос, последнее свидание
Блеск твоих глаз, слёзы, стенания.
