I apologize for my beginner's question but I have been studying Russian for only a couple of months....

Could someone tell me how to pronounce "объект"? My instinct is that the hard sign will create a sound like an English "j" or something akin so that the word sounds something like eng "object"... but at this point, I have learned just enough about this wonderful language to know that one cannot assume anything.....

It doesn't sound like the English word.
It's pronounced [абйэкт], the э is stressed.

In English letters: ah-b-yeh-ct (the 'y' like in 'yes')

Try to say ab and then say ye from yesterday. Then add kt you will get ob-ye-kt/

Why would a hard sign produce an English 'J' sound, where have you read this, why do you think this?

Just because object in English has a J sound doesn't mean every language has to. Furthermore the letter J is pronounced completely differently in different languages. E.g. English, French, Spanish, German all have different sounds for the same letter J.

The sound J doesn't exist in Russian. If a foreign word / name contains it then it is rendered дж in Russian.

"Obejct" isn't even an English word in origin. It just entered the language. So the English pronunciation bears no influece on how it is pronounced in Russian.

I tried to explain my mental process here, silly though it is:

But I know enough now about Russian to know better than to trust my learner's instincts... As you mention, the sounds given to certain characters in different languages differ widely... If I have an instinct on this, surely it has been picked up from studying one of these other languages, Latin, Spanish, French, Dutch..... It's almost a bygone conclusion that an instinct like that would be wrong. Thus my question.

On the other hand.... The general syllabic pronunciation of "ob-yekt" does kind of remind me of some of the romance languages that use "j" like English uses consonantial (sp?w?) "y"..... "object" pronounced like it might be in the Latin language would be "ob-yekt".... интересный....

I remember when I first started with Russian. I was a junior in high school and signed up for my senior year. Over the summer I went to the school and bought the textbook, to help get a head start. Try as I might, I had absolutely no clue as to how words like к and в were pronounced. Was really looking forward to having a real live teacher.

I have a real gift for language, inherited from my grandma, and had already been studying Spanish for 3 years, so foreign languages were not new to me. Still, there were those к and в. But it could have been worse - glad I wasn't starting out with Czech and its Strč prst skrz krk!
