Vowel reduction, quick question

I am trying to wrap my head around vowel reduction in the Russian language, however, it is quite tricky, in my opinion.
Take for example the two words below. Would I be right in thinking that these sound the same?
In my coursebook ( princeton course ) it says that 'e' and 'я' are reduced to 'schwa' (a sound that we don't have in Dutch, I believe, but from my understanding it's just saying 'yuh' with a very relaxed mouth and almost no breath). And an unstressed 'o' gets reduced to 'a' as well, albeit a less articulated 'a'.
Could someone clarify this for me: do these two words sound the same and is the difference only in spelling, or is there a difference in pronunciation as well?

There is no difference in pronunciation of these words unless speaker articulates intentionally to emphasize the difference or to avoid misunderstandings.

I disagree, too. I've always noticed that though the sounds at the end of sush words are very similiar they are not the same. I even remember a time when, context didn't show an adjective of what gender was said and relying on what I heard I made the right choice; and I don't think the speaker articulated intentionally.

I think if you will pronounce them the same, you won't be wrong. However, I advice you to do it the way natives do. Inspite of what is said in your coursebook, I hear different sounds pronouncing the words. By contrast I feel that my mouth is a bit more widely open while pronouncing вкусная and the positions of the toungue slighty differ.

Only at the beginning of words or in the prestressed syllable, otherwise it is a shwa as well as "a".
There is no difference in pronunciation between вкусное и вкусная.

Summarizing, let us say that there is some tolerance in pronouncing such sounds by native speakers. One can articulate more or less, so pronunciation of unstressed vowels can vary from "all like shwa" to "all like stressed". For you as a foreigner at the beginning it is recommended to pronounce with a bit more articulation to ensure that you will be understood. On the other hand, native speakers normally do not articulate much.

Hmm, I asked my girlfriend, who is from Russia, and she said that there is a difference in pronunciation :( That makes it a bit more difficult, hehe.

There is a difference. It's hardly noticeable, but for a native speaker it isn't.

вкусная - while the у is emphasised, the я is slighlty emphasised in speech too - vkUsknayA
вкусное - same rule, but the last syllable is ayE, despite there being an o before e

Actually, Dutch has the schwa. Consider the Dutch word de /də/, or the verb ending -en /-ən/ in kennen or springen. Perhaps it will help you pronounce the reduced vowel - or schwa - correctly in Russian, as it is the same sound, which is found in your native language.

To my foreign ear, Russians speaking at normal conversational speeds will pronounce вкусная and вкусное as something very close to:

вкуснəй

That is, with the vowel after the н (а or о) completely reduced to a "schwa", and the final vowel (я or е) reduced so much that it is hardly even a distinct syllable -- it's closer to "diphthongal" y in English "boy" or й in Russian мой. So, in essence, the word seems to have two syllables, not three.

However, when Russians are speaking more slowly and carefully, you can hear the three syllables, but both words still sound the same (FKOOS-nə-yə).

On the other hand, IMHO, the first я and the е in пятьдесят ("fifty") are both reduced to и, NOT to ə (schwa). Only the final я, being stressed, is unreduced.

P.S. I agree with it-ogo's advice that it's perfectly okay for you, as a foreign learner, to pronounce words more carefully than native Russian speakers do. Similarly, if you're a foreigner learning English, it's perfectly okay to fully pronounce the "L" in walk and talk, even though the "L" in these words is totally silent in the normal speech of many native speakers. (Thus the joke, "Have you seen the new Chinese cookbook? It's called 101 Ways to Wok Your Dog.") And other native speakers basically reduce to "L" to something like a "W", which alters the quality of the vowel "A" before it, and turns it into a diphthong. And still other native speakers pronounce the "L" as a normal "L".

Значить, э… встретился я, значить… Южном побережье Крыма вообще… вообще всё дело-то произошло. Значит, одним словом б<ыло>… произошло так. Сидит чувак, так… с шалавой… и шалава - с собачкой одновременно, представляешь?
