"Взб"... Is one of the consonants ignored when you read the word, or how is this handled...?

It is just a dark side of Russian morphology.

Ok - I've listened to that song a few times now:
Yup, it sounds like the "Б" is almost silent.
And the -Я at the end is clearer "-ya" and not so much like "a" as I had thought.

Взбираться - это еще не предел.

Взбзднуть (vulg. to break wind) It is only one vowel in 9 letters in this word and all consonant are clear.

And a more civilised one that I just came across....

"взгляд"

This word has 6 letter and only one vowel!
(and IMO "я" is a bit questionable as a vowel since it seems to be just a cooler way of writing "йа")

I hope there aren't too many words like this!
I CAN pronounce "взгляд", but only if I I really concentrate... If there is more than one word like this in a sentence, then I won't be able to manage it while speaking at a normal speed...

I recognise him from Russian films, he is great! I never had any idea what his name was though. But I guess he must be quite famous!

Frunze was a revolutionist. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikhail_Frunze
The surname Мкртчян is Armenian and for Russians it's unpronounceable too.

Do you have the complete paid for installation? I know in the trial version there was no sound, even though it had the little sound icon thingy.

Yeah, Мкртчян is not a very good example because it's not a Russian surname.

Vowels creep into the pronunciation, anyway - [мыкр(т)чан]. Besides the consonants [r] and [l] are "слогообразующие" (syllable-forming), so they make such combinations of consonants possible. I wouldn't say they're so very widespread or difficult in Russian... "Взгляд" doesn't seem so hard... I think it's just a matter of getting used to particular consonant groups, like "взвод", "взвизгнуть", "встреча", "встрепенуться". You pronounce the consonant group very quickly, stressing the vowel.

"Взбзднуть" is def not a word one hears ever so often!

Now, the Czech language... Here's an opportunity to twist your tongue!

смрт / smrt -- смерть

влк прлз скрз тврз / vlk prlz skrz tvrz -- волк пролез в крепость (или как-то так это переводится, точно не помню)

Strč prst skrz krk -- засунь палец в горло.

And we should not forget Georgian, of course.
E.g., a Georgian grammar term "screeve" (a verb conjugation paradigm) is just an adaptation of a Georgian word "mtskrivi" (мцкриви) which is completely odd for English (and not only English) speakers.

Thanks! I worked it out.. Needed to do a "full" installation and then switch to the standard English - Russian dictionary.
